12 December A great deal of own goal action since my last update! Six were scored in November alone and with two at the beginning of December we have seventeen now for the year.

Martin Skrtel's goal for Newcastle was Liverpool's first of the season and puts him joint third in the all time top flight table. And with Olivier Giroud scoring against Sunderland, Arsenal now lead the table. He also became the second player in as many weeks to score at both ends after Troy Deeney.

My friend James Hyett has noted his initials, Olivier Giroud; need we say more!

As can be seen, Arsenal have made a sudden move in the last few weeks to lead the table!

Liverpool's own goal last week means that more than half of the teams in the Premier League are now on the scoresheet.

Chelsea lead the list of beneficiaries with three, while Man United and West Brom have two each. Arsenal also have two, giving them a net benefit of minus one!

In five of their games this season you would have seen an own goal, easily the highest total.

18 October An own goal by Alan Hutton of Aston Villa helped Chelsea to a 2-0 win. This is Villa's first of the season and is the third in Chelsea's favour, putting them one ahead of Arsenal as the season's main beneficiaries. Time for a summary of which teams have scored the nine own goals so far!

17 October The first league games for a couple of weeks today, so we'll see if there are any own goals to add to the list by the end of the day! In the meantime, I noticed that the Goal Accreditations Panel has ruled that Dusan Tadic's goal against Swansea was in fact an own goal by Sung Yueng Ki; this is Swansea's second of the season so brings them level with Tottenham and Crystal Palace on the leaderboard.

16 October The Giedrius Arlauskis own goal in the game against Lithuania brings them back in line with Wayne Rooney as England's top scorer!

8 October Harry Kane is on the scoresheet again, but at the wrong end! His own goal for Swansea is the seventh in the Premier League this season, and puts Spurs level with Palace at the top of the table.

29 September The Goal Accreditation Panel have awarded Eden Hazard's goal from a couple of weeks ago to Calum Chambers of Arsenal, so Arsenal's first of the season, taking the total in the Premier League to six. http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/news/2015-16/goal-accreditations-for-2015-16.html

Wayne Rooney is now back ahead of Own Goals for England; congratulations on his 50!

Five own goals have been scored in the Premier League so far this season. A bit of a lull recently though with none yet in September.

Crystal Palace have scored two this year and lead the list (having scored none last year).

Last years 'winners' were Leicester City with five goals. They also hold the record since the turn of the century with seven in 2003/4.

The record in more recent years is held jointly by Sunderland, Aston Villa and Hull with six goals.

Arsenal have the the greatest benefit from own goals this year with two. The recent record is held by Man United with an astonishing 12 in 2009/10.
